I work remotely with a coworker who uses AIM through Gmail. But he
never, ever, ever goes idle, even when he's been away from the
computer for days. This is frustrating because I never know when I'm
talking to no one or when he's just being unresponsive. I can't find
any settings to fix this, and my search for solutions turned up
nothing. Any ideas? Much thanks.

Thanks for responding. I have checked all the settings for AIM within
Gmail and I can't find anything about showing idle status. If he was
using standalone software, I would know where to look and what to tell
him -- but he is using AIM through Gmail. Any ideas?

Oh. In that case, no, I'm afraid I can't help. I don't use AIM through
gmail, only as its own client or through Pidgin. Sorry! Perhaps
someone else will see this and chime in.

Taking a guess at this one, he may have AIM switched on as a separate
entity but no sidebar showing. Have a look at the bottom of his screen
in the toolbar for the AIM icon, right click it and exit. The
possibility is that as it's a company system and server he may
hibernate for the master server to update in idle hours.
