I was drafting the third e-mail in a string. After several instances
of clicking "save draft" and also having Gmail "autosave" my draft, I
accidentally clicked "discard" instead of "save draft," and VOILA!,
the draft was completely, seemingly irretrievably GONE!! :-(
Is there anyway to get back the draft? Before you respond, I've
hopefully narrowed the list of possible suggestions by letting you
know what I've already tried:
- I have Snippets enabled, but the draft is gone from the string.
- I have looked around my Gmail via both the "old" and "new" versions,
to no avail.
- I have looked through my folders (including "Drafts" and "Trash" -
the latter of which only autodeletes 30-day old trash), to no avail.
- I have used the "Back" button on Explorer (because I had previously
saved earlier versions of this draft, and it had autosaved several
times, so I thought I might find at least an earlier version of the
draft that way), to no avail.
Whatever help you can offer, I'd sincerely appreciate.

I am disappointed if losing an accidentally-discarded draft is the
only, cold, cruel answer, for (1) it is so easy to accidentally
discard a draft (given the close proximity of the "Save Now" and
"Discard" buttons) and (2) to not be able to recover same seems
contrary to Gmail's general construct of providing an array of "safety
nets," if you will, such as the Trash folder (for accidentally-deleted
mail) and the Autosave feature (for saving drafts otherwise lost to a
computer freeze or reboot, power outage, etc.), to name just two
items.

Is gmail doing anything about this problem? I had this happen to me
today &
it's very frustrating to say the least!
I've searched for a way to contact/message
gmail support, to no avail. Is gmail aware of this problem?

I just had this happen to me this morning. I have had a draft running
where I have been storing primary research for the past 3 months and
accidentally hit Discard. It was absolutely heart-wrenching to learn
there was no way to recover this. I, too, can not seem to find a way
to contact google support.....even though they say you can contact
them via email.....but there seems to be no email address.

Where does it say you can contact google support by email?
Suppose you work on a draft in a thread.
Save it is a draft.
Find another email in that thread, that you want to reply to.
Hit reply.
Your draft will appear, ready to send to this new person.
Ack! You don't want to send that - you want to write a new email.
Now you are stuck. Your draft is there, and you cannot get rid of it
to send
another email, except by hitting "discard". Thus gmail actually
entices
you to lose all your work.
Or, you cannot send another email until you send that draft.

I too am now the victim of a lost draft, and pretty annoyed.
I used to think Gmail was perfect, pretty much the epitome of the
email client. It's still great, but this would have never happened on
yahoo. I'm just bothered I cannot restore my draft. Thats a horrible
place for a discard button. I know the answer is to watch what you're
doing before you click, but that was a total mistake on my part. Now I
have to recompose the whole thing and I know it wont be the same. Uggh.

My mouse went into sleep mode...the only way to wake it is to click
the button...and when I did, the arrow was on the delete button...my
lengthy draft is gone. Totally sucks!

I sure hope the gmail senior staff is starting to notice this issue!
It's becoming a major flaw in gmail. I've had this happen to me 5-10
times now and it gets more and more aggravating every time. Like it
seems pretty screwed up that drafts can be lost so easy, with just
this one slight safeguard when even trash has TWO major filters. It
honestly seems to me that if you are typing your email, and don't
direct your mouse with full effort after typing, that the clicker
magically will go right towards that stupid discard button, and lose
your email. Maybe it will sound like a bit of a 'conspiracy theory',
but that is sure the way it's seeming to me. Like all emails on gmail
are supposed to be archived and saved automatically, yet the slightest
minor thing and wham!!!, all that time you spent typing a good email
to someone turns into a massive amount of time completely lost and
wasted in your already busy life.
Please gmail - fix this problem already!!! You guys have put more than
enough work into adding great new features to the gmail service - but,
at least fix the major glitches in it hey.
