I'm in the same boat as many of you as well. Earlier this afternoon
my password stopped working, and I believe that my account has been
compromised, (I also had an issue with paypal that is being resolved
as well, and so i think it might be the same person since both
accounts used the same password).
In the mean time I have set up a new temporary gmail account, just so
i could log on here. I have tried filling in the account recovery
form a few times and its always inconclusive. I really wish gmail had
a customer support number to help the process. My email account
djclement@gmail is the central hub to my life and all my personal,
business and other dealings, so this is a giant blow, almost like
identity theft to some degree.
any help from anyone? i can also be reached at
[email address]

1) DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ON A PUBLIC FORUM SUCH AS
THIS.
2) If you are using Gmail for business, you need the premium
service. It is very economical and a lot safer from hackers.
3) "..an issue with paypal .........since both accounts used the
same password" Are you serious???? Never use same password for
important accounts. Even if you have to write passwords down in a
little black book or PDA, it is a lot safer than using the same PW for
Gmail and paypal. It's not your friends and neighbors you should worry
about, it's some guy in Romania or Uganda buying a BMW with your
credit card.

So since he's still actively using my account, does that mean that the
password recovery wont work because the account is not sitting idle?

Sorry for your predicament, if you look at this forum you will see
that this is a big problem - google even say they don't want it
discussed on the forum description.
To get back your life, you first need to fill out the google
compromised form (available when you try to login) to get your account
disabled, this will stop them from responding to emails from your
friends asking if it is you. The hackers will have changed the
secondary email details on the account and it is nearly impossible to
get back the account from google to see what the spammers have
actually done. If you get back in, it would be advisable to delete any
external account details from your online mail accounts (always store
them locally).
The bad news is the Nigerian spammers will have looked for any emails
in the gmail account that have details about login or passwords for
ebay, paypal etc. If they still work, log in and move them to another
yahoo/hotmail account. Ebay, paypal and yahoo are excellent at
handling compromised accounts and will make sure that nothing bad
happens, but you will need to try and remember any other online
accounts that have your personal details. Google has taken it so
seriously, they have put an AJAX script in charge of public accounts,
so don't hold out too much hope of getting it back (hundreds on this
forum are left in this limbo state).
Get back to this forum if the account recovey procedure works - and
don't waste time taken advise from 'whit33' - their/his responses are
as helpful as the automated responses (waste your life repeating the
recovery form over and over, or pay $50 and we'll give you a phone
number).
Good luck with getting the account back, let us know how you get on.

I'm sorry to hear your account's been compromised. You should fill out
the form at http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/request.py?ara=1 with as much information as you can about your account. Make sure you
include a contact address to which you have access.

First off, my apologies for posting all this stuff in the wrong
forum,
I know how annoying it can be for you guys and that wasn't my
intention. I'm hoping to PM you to possibly help me out in
recovering
my gmail account. I am absolutely desperate to fully recover my
profile which has tons of personal data that I cannot afford to lose.
On August 21st, my account was compromised by a hacker who has since
been trying to hold it for a ransom. I've been in daily
communication
with him since then. I am temporarily using a yahoo email account
(booo!) and sending messages to my personal gmail account.
Several times now, I have filled out the form in great detail and in
very small detail in regards to recovering my account. everytime it
comes back inconclusive. I know for sure that I can answer my
security question, and I can even answer very specific questions
about
item in my inbox as well as several archived items, unfortunately
there is no way of accessing that email or anyone who can help. I
can
even identify myself to you guys in several ways.
You guys are my last possible hope in recovering my account. Gmail
has been my central hub for everything that I do online both
personally and for business, and it is a great service that I cannot
live without. any help you, or someone else can provide would be
greatly appreciated, I can be contacted anytime via phone or
alternate
email. Please, I want to work with you guys to stop this person from
stealing my identity, and also potentially harming any of my contacts
on gmail.
thank you for your time, my fate is in your guys's hands, if there is
ANYTHING i can do, please let me know
