This isn't so much a problem as it is me being anal about consistency.
While logged into a Google account, your email appears in the top
right-hand corner. On some Google sites (Gmail, Reader, Calendar) my
email address appears in all lower-case letters ([email address]).
However, on others (Google's main page and Groups, for instance) it
appears with the first letter capitalized ([email address]). I
created a new Gmail account a few days ago, and it does not have this
problem.
By any chance, and I realize it's probably not possible, is there any
way to make it appear as all lower-case letters? If not, why is it
that my newer account does it?
Mine shows lower case in Gmail and in Groups (such as this Help
group).
When you set up your original email account, did you use a mix of
upper and lower case? Sitting here thinking, that is the only thing I
can figure out.
Also in the upper-right corner of your Gmail screen, to the right of
your email address, you will see either "Older version" or "Newer
Version"
If you see "Newer version", click that to return to the former Gmail
interface.
If you see "Older version", click that to switch to the newer Gmail
interface.
This may or may not solve that type of issue. However, it might spark
an idea or two for you to look at.

I set up the account well over a year ago, but as far as I can
remember, I may have made the username KuriKokku. Maybe it's taken
only the first letter for some reason?
As for the Gmail solution you offered, gmail shows it in all lowercase
already, so that wouldn't change anything. I tried, just in case, with
no avail. Thanks, though!
It's only on about half of Google's services that the first letter is
capitalized, so that's what bothers me the most.
