No-name flour recalled
Oct 12, 2008 08:04 PM
Precious Yutangco
Staff Reporter

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is recalling no-name brand
all-purpose flour because the product may contain excessively high levels of
folic acid, iron, niacin, riboflavin and thiamine.

Four people have reported having reactions after consuming the product.

The affected products were sold in 2.5 kg (5.5 lb.) bags bearing lot codes
that start with 125J. The UPC code is 0 60383 01375 2.

The items have been distributed throughout Ontario by No Frills, Cash and
Carry, Freshmart, Fortinos, Zehrs, The Real Canadian Superstore and Loblaws.

When dry, the flour has a normal, light beige colour. It may turn
yellow-orange when mixed with water.

If consumers eat normal levels of products made from this flour, they may
exhibit symptoms of flushed skin, where it turns red in colour, it may feel
warm or may cause itching. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea - a direct result of the excess iron and niacin.

The CFIA is urging consumers not to eat the flour or products made from the
flour, regardless of how little is used.

Contact a doctor if you consumed some of the flour.

If your item does not have a lot code, contact the store you bought it from
and ask them whether it is included in the recall.

The flour is manufactured by Prairie Flour Mills Ltd., which is based out of
Elie, Manitoba. Prairie Flour Mills is voluntarily recalling the products
and is fully co-operating with the CFIA.

For more information, please call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 or visit
