I missed it as I had a 2 month old commitment. But that's not the point. The
community ride on last Saturday of the month is called CM. Why is it
reported otherwise? I think we should be very careful when speaking to
reporters as they publish anything (last 350 event one reporter called it a
citizen matters initiative when he was asked to refer citizen matters
article for more information! :)).
The anniversary ride is being planned already and there will be good many
people.

But that news article and the group website sounds like a personal propaganda for someone who wants to be famous, rather than a community activity. Someone's photo and mention of name and quotes is just about everywhere, which looks a bit odd for a community initiative. (believe me, it might be different inside the club, but that's what appears from outside)
Doing community service and yet keeping a low profile is a virtue, which not many posses.
Biking is all about freedom, and having a leader and hierarchy just kills it. I appreciate organizers of the BBCh who keep mentioning again and again that there are no leaders, all volunteers.
There is a huge difference between a "Go Green" ride and a Critical Mass. CM is about freedom, where nobody has to recruit members, where nobody needs to do branding, where no single person is important, and there is no personal race about getting noticed.
I felt a global initiative like Critical Mass was hijacked in Bangalore, and felt bad about it.
I am a distant observer, and might be wrong, but that's what I felt.
Anand, u'r observation is not fully wrong.. we are trying to make the
next CM - the anniversary one - special and more importantly, diverse
and participative..
you are welcome to throw in any suggestions.

My view is very simple - factions kill most initiatives - FLOSS is a good example
(yet another similarity b/n lynux
n byking! :)).
So I would not be in favor of any more groups! :)
We had this another group - IT For cyclers. It had (Probably still has)
around 600 people - 300 cyclists and 300 interested. We requested them
several times to join hands and have a single community like vconnect/hasiruusiru.
Today I have no clue where they are (hoping they are reading this
mail). They said they wanted an exclusive group for bikers from IT - a
couple of us pushed them to circulate the community mails but... That's
a huge number lost!!!
The only faction that I think of sometimes is possibly an announcement
only mailing list so that people are not overwhelmed by traffic on this
list. Attempts to move discussions to forum (bikeszone) have not worked
saving this list for announcements - the forum is very active in any
case! :)
BBCh rocks big time coz of the way it is being handled. The good will
for such initiatives as bike workshops and all else will remain
irrespective of who handles them. BOTS is a fine example - byke
maintenance workshops, movie nights, now stretches, etc. There is no
FACTION there! :) Simple... All BOTS bikers are on BBC, RACF members on
BBC, etc. We are encouraging all vendors to request the people who buy
bikes to join the community.
I see a lot of bikers on the road who are not on BBC. Trying to get
them all on this community - the only connect being byking - for fun,
for health, for env, for snaps in newspaper and other media (some do
want that! :)), for watever else!!! :)
This is purely my personal belief from the few years into volunteering
and byking.
All said and done. I wud personally hate it if CM came to an end. I
admire anybody who does their bit to preserve the numbers. We talk
about CM as a good first ride in the byke workshops. Let's all
participate and ensure it continues to be a fun event.
