If in doubt: - use your favorite search engine to look for whatever with site:sheldonbrown.com tag (for me it explains 90% of questions) - same with site:bikeforums.net tag (be prepared to spend a lot of time here. For me it has always explained the other 10%). Especially the "bike mechanics" section.

useful.
