Today, I went to Changi Museum with my group. Through today’s outing, I
learnt that the Japanese soldiers were cruel and heartless in their actions
and treated the P.O.W.s harshly to a certain extent and the method they used
to invade South-East Asia.. The Japanese soldiers were cruel and heartless
as when they invaded Singapore, the Changi Prison cell was only made for one
person but when the Japs came, they squeezed five people into one cell. At
first there were already not enough space to move about when one person is
inside, but the Japs could not care less, they just squeezed five into a
cell! I can imagine how crammed it is. However, despite the harsh
surroundings, the P.O.W.s were able to continue with life. Many of them
believed that tomorrow is going to be better. So believing that, the P.O.W.s
continued to live. There was also some P.O.W. who painted on the walls of
the mural. This person is Stanley Warren. One of them read: God forgive them
they know not what they do. This sentence probably targets the Japanese
soldiers as Warren thought that they were acting under orders and not
thinking of ways how to punish the P.O.W.s so they were not to be blamed.
Moreover, I think that the sentence is also to criticize the Person in
charge. Warren was smart to use this method to criticize the Jap commander
as the Japs don’t understand English so they will not be able to tell the
commander about this and thus escaping punishment.
The method that Japan used to defeat Malaya was ingenious as they have
fenced of the lower part of the troops from attacking their forces while the
Japs were doing the invasion.
So in conclusion, these trips have been useful and I had learnt a lot of
things.
