I have learnt many things from this trip to Changi Museum. First, we
watched a video produced by Mediacorp on the topic about the murals
located at Changi Prison Block 151. Stanley Wrren was a Prisoner Of
War. He suffered a lot but he still used his outmost effort to draw the
murals. He wanted to enlighten and inspire other POWs by drawing the
murals depicting the scene of God. I think the murals were like a kind
of saviour to the miserable POWs. Also, this story also shows the
cruelty of the Japanese. They treated the POWs as if they were not
human beings. The Japanese starved them, making them vulnerable to
illnesses and deaths. The Japanese made the POWs do heavy works, in
spite of the POWs being very weak and sick. Under all these conditions,
most of the POWs were unable to pull through.
I think the way the Japanese invaded Singapore was also unique. The
British did not expect them to attack from land. Although the Japanese
were outnumbered, they conquered Singapore without much trouble. This
showed a lack of flexibility of the British. This has directly led to
the defeat of the British.
After this trip to Changi Museum, I have changed my views on both the
Japanese and the British.
