Hidden Fortress (1958)

" A general and a princess must dodge enemy clans while smuggling the
royal treasure out of hostile territory with two bumbling, conniving
peasants at their sides; it's a spirited adventure that only Akira
Kurosawa could create. The Criterion Collection is proud to present
this landmark motion picture in a stunning, newly-restored Tohoscope
edition. "-Netflix

Fabulous film .  The two peasants are really funny.  The princess
isn't exactly beautiful but she would have made a fantastic Romulan
commander.  An then there's General Toshiro Mifune who completely
steals the show.

"These aren't the bumbling, conniving peasants you're looking for..."

Hidden Fortress is one of my favorite Akira Kurosawa movies. This one
I've watched many times. Its also one of my favorite Toshiro Mifune
movies.

In an interview, I've seen Star Wars director, George Lucas, mention
that the two peasants who appear in the first scene and throughout the
movie influenced his creation of the R2D2 and C3PO characters in Star
Wars. Notice there is also a princess that must be returned to her
homeland through enemy territory by the Mifune character -- complete
with a treasure of hidden gold bars.

If you like Kurosawa movies and haven't seen it, definitely check it
out. -- Rik

Well, yes- she isn't 'beautiful by certain standards but in the
context of her being raised as a tomboy in the times the story is set
in... she would have made a great Romulan Commander.

If you've missed this classic Kurosawa movie, its showing in the USA on
the International Film Channel (IFC) this Saturday morning at 7:00 AM
central time. Set your DVR....

Funnily enough, this morning I found the Criterion Collection DVD of 'The Hidden Fortress' in the mailbox. ;)
