" Jen (puppeteered by Jim Henson), the last of the Gelfling race, is charged with healing the Crystal of Truth -- now called the Dark Crystal after it was cracked, leading to an era of terror -- by finding a missing shard in Aughra's (Frank Oz) observatory. The wicked Skeksis will rule eternally if Jen doesn't complete his mission before the Great Conjunction of the three suns. Henson and Oz co-direct this classic fantasy film. " - Netflix
Fabulous film. This is the pinnacle of Henson and Oz's puppet imaginings.

Probably of anyone's... which is the best (and imho entirely sufficient) argument against a modern remake/sequel...

But, as Lucas proved with Yoda, all the puppets can be done with CGI now. So that makes it the perfect time. Imagine the savings, not having to buy all that cloth, or hire the people to hide within it.

Of course the original could have been told easier and cheaper just using cel animation as well :)
We've seen a somewhat continued use of stop motion animation lately, not just the occasional movie but with two Cartoon Network shows, but I wonder if anyone will bring puppets to the fore again like Henson did. I don't see Avenue Q, as great as it is, spawning a resurgence of the art form and Brian Henson doesn't seem to have continued his fathers work in that area.
(the stop motion Robot Chicken show did a segment on a remake of The Dark Crystal, a hiphop version about Crystal Champagne)
