Beverly Hills, CA—Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will serve as co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards®, Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman announced today.
We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Shankman and Mechanic. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”
“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.
“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.
Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.
Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). Baldwin earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

March? You mean the Oscars are finally migrating back to their natural time of year? Now if we could only get the Superbowl back in January and the World Series back in October where they belong! Oh, and no hockey after Memorial Day, either!

I get how baseball and hockey are seasonal, but why is March "natural" for the Oscars? Seems to me that the closer the Oscars are to the beginning of the year the better, since they celebrate the previous year's movies.

That's just the way I remember it. It was a rite of spring.

Because the Acedemy has too many members that don't see films until they get nominated, and this year there will be 10, and the later it is the better chance they have to see the films before voting.

The dozen other awards shows manage. Actually that's another reason to have the Oscars earlier - squeezes out some of the unnecessary back-patting fests.

That's what I've been saying!
And if you're gonna nominate obscure movies, you gotta give people time to see 'em. But those coasters are all Twitter now, now, now, when Middle America couldn't give a tweet!

That's exactly why they should be obstinate. Every other fuckfest caters to public opinion, but they want to be special. In order to do that, they need a giant gold hand with the Statuette as the middle finger, and a press release saying, "Fuck you, we're the Oscars, and we're on the Last Monday Night in March!"

I'll watch if Sir Alec promise-- s from the podium, to call 15-year- old Dakota Fanning or 13-year-old Abagail Breslin, sitting in the audience, on his cell phone and berate her and call her a pig and hang up.

They could schedule the Oscars in January and make all the awards shows airing around that time moot.

All they would do is either force the other awards to be earlier, or it would make things even more irrelevant, because no one outside of New York and LA can get to see the nominations.
It used to be that Driving Miss Daisy would get early buzz from NY-LA, and that would convince distributors to trickle the film around the country. And they would reach the $100 million mark.
But now, no one knows why they ought to see any piece of crap.
Forget it. Early Oscars are stupid, and the people who knew how to make Hollywood run knew it too.

What if Steve plays "Dueling Banjos" from Deliverance?

It was a mainstream crowd-pleaser. People also saw "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Benjamin Button." But extending their runs by months still won't get people to see "Frost/Nixon" and "The Reader."

Last year's show was held on February 22nd. A few weeks between late February and early March can't make that much difference.

And get Bill McKinney to reprise his scene from that movie, only with Baldwin in Ned Beatty's place.

Just for the record, 72-year-old Ned Beatty is still around. And still acting. He'll do a voice in TOY STORY 3, among other upcoming credits.
