Third Degree Burn (USA) 1989
Hey, I think it was Ross Macdonald who created the modern (as in post- Hammett, Chandler, Spillane) private detective as a loser. That was one of the aspects Altman played on with "The Long Goodbye" and it's at work in this Roger Spottiswoode film. Scott Weston (Treat Williams) is a low-rent private eye who gets work from his lawyer or another... more »

narrated by directors
DeMille narrated 'The Greatest Show on Earth' and 'The Ten Commandments'. Woody Allen narrated 'Radio Days' (as the grown-up version of the main child character). What other movies have been narrated by their directors? I think Fellini may have narrated 'Intervista' but I'm not sure.

Help ID war film
I am trying to ID a World War II film I remember seeing as a kid (in the mid 1960s). A cargo ship is in the North Atlantic being stalked by a U-boat. After much cat and mouse action, the cargo ship plows through heavy fog and rams the sub. I distinctly remember the massive prow of the Liberty ship emerging from the fog before smashing into... more »

PING: Jim Beaver re: Monte Walsh
Hey Jim Monte Walsh (1970) is on TCM next week. On imdb, I read your synopsis of the Tom Selleck 2003 version. Based on your synopsis and my memory of the 1970 edition, the two movies seem quite different. Are they really that much different? Which do you like better? Is that even a fair question... if the two... more »

Lost World (1960)
This is the worst adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's story I have seen. We follow professor Challanger and his freinds as they journey into the Amazon in search of a world of dinosaurs on a hidden plateau. Only now the story is moved up to 1960, and we are supposed to believe that there is a place that... more »

Time Magazine on the Cisco Ki... er... router
An interesting article, suggesting imminent major upheaval in all movie-watching landscapes. [link] E.g.: "This [recent technology] would allow consumers to complete a PC download of a Hollywood blockbuster like Avatar in about 72 seconds." "With superfast streaming and downloading, indie filmmakers will... more »

Corvette K-225 (1943) & Five Graves to Cairo (1943)
I felt in the mood for some wartime propaganda, so I had a look at these two films from 1943. Corvette K-225 (1943) is the story about the crew and ship and its journey with a convoy from Canada to Ireland. The film features Randolph Scott as the captain of the ship. Also an unknown actor by the name of Robert Mitchum... more »
