"The Poseidon Adventure" - a review on video
(I posted this earlier, but I was in such a rush I didn't think of how best to phrase all this. I also got it confused with something else - jeez.) [link] By a friend of mine. The other two reviews are the 1966 "Manos the Hands of Fate" (also once reviewed by MST3K) at 4:29, followed, I... more »

AMC
Gee, remember how great AMC used to be? Terrific old movies without commercial interuption. Short subjects and sometimes even cartoon. Now it sucks, newer movies hacked to peices with commercials, crawls and bugs during the movie. I sure do miss the old AMC, thank God for TCM!

Russian "Sherlock Holmes" TV Series
I finally got all 11 parts of the Lenfilm TVseries "Sherlock Holmes". This lavish repackaging of the Canon stars Vasili Litvanov as Holmes and Vitali Solomin as Watson and presents a difficult problem in comparison with other adaptations of the Doyle works because (a) is is Russian and therefore darkly introspective and (b) the scriptwriters... more »

The Man Who Knew Too Much
Apparently Hitchcock liked his remake better, but Doris Day spoiled it for me. I liked the mom from the first one better. And she got to shoot one of the bad guys at the end.

French Cancan (1954)
French Cancan (1954) is listed as a musical, but there is only slight singing in it. There is some dancing however. The film was made by Jean Renoir and features Jean Gabin as the founder of Moulin Rouge. It is the story of how the poor girl Nini is lured away from her baker boyfriend to become Gabin's mistress and a woman of the theatre. The film is quite good,... more »

Discovering Actors/Actresses Working Backwards
OK, that header is pretty cryptic. What Im talking about is discovering the earlier works of a personality/actor/actress that you originally know from late in (or after) their career. For example, I first encountered Kitty Carlisle as a participant in some game show ('To Tell the Truth"?) with no idea of her... more »

Second most startling instant change of location ( 2001 is first )
Again Land of the Pharaohs... from the cool torch - lighted, solemn inner chamber, pow ! right to the dazzling bright desert view of the departing slaves with sunlight glistening off the surface of the pyramid in the background. Really memorable in a theater.

Film most effective in making you feel you are somewhere else
Land of the Pharaohs , both in the building of the pyramids and inside the completed tomb
