Russ made a comment in another thread about leaving money to his cat and Will in New Haven had a very touching story about his mother and her cat Wootoo I think.
I am a big animal guy. I like cats AND dogs. I like turtles, ferrets, monkeys, fish etc. You name it and I like em. But what is with people who leave thousands upon thousands of dollars to their pet? I mean the pet cannot use it. NOTHING can come of a pet having that money. The ONLY exception is if someone didn't have family and wanted to make sure the pet was taken car eof and not killed or left to die after they passed.
Maybe paying someone out of a running trust to take care of your pet. That actually just gave me a good business idea. Rich people die and want their pet to be taken care of right. Most of these old people IF they have family are a little crazy and think maybe the family will kill the pet when they die. This is where Pet Heaven comes in. I make a business out of taking pets that have owners that have died in and take care of them. REALLY take care of them. Like pay for manicures and bubble baths, walks all that shit. The person who passed gives the money to the cat who then has to pay for MY services to take care of it.
Seriously though what is up with people leaving money to their pet? Wouldn't an organization that takes care of that kind of animal a better place to leave your money?

AFAIK, that's exactly what most people with that kind of money do.
And, if you are old, rich, dying, and don't know a single person you trust enough to look after yer beloved pet, I feel for ya. I really do.
In all of Russ' and anyone else who talks about leaving animals money, your post made me think of this scenario;
A person dies, let's say, chokes to death, whatever. The cops and caregivers come to the persons house. Animals all over. Or, a few, whatever. The guy in charge orders the homeless pets to the animal shelter. For reasons unknown they are euthanized, before the will is read.

lol
Honestly I would guess that there is some kind of process to the whole euthanizing pets after someone dies thing. I would guess they have to wait until family/friends come by OR a will is read etc.

If there are no other relatives of benificaries then the state usually takes it all.

It's four cats and indoor cats at that. This is pretty expensive. Plus, the moment I die, the cats will be taken. I had dogs also, but gave them to friend who lost theirs due to old age. They now live very well.

In your scenario, do the pets have wills? That might be good to know.

A pet is a very minor, unless you have a Gorilla or a stripper for a pet, expense. But it is a continuing expense. My mom left enough so that taking care of WooToo is _no_ expense for me. It doesn't amount to "thousands and thousands of dollars" It is part of the money that she would have left for me anyway. And setting it up this way was fun and consolation for her while she was in remission from the cancer that eventually killed her.

This is not the worst business idea I have ever heard.

I have given quite a bit of money to a no-kill animal shelter. I would have given more but I am setting up a foundation to hunt down people who start uneccesary new threads and kill them.

I have lots of people, but all of them have pets. Most of them have dogs. Most of them own houses and have dog doors. All the feral cats around my house I feed. Raccoons come onto my porch and eat. Possums do also. A cat (feral) I had been feeding for the last 6 years , which I could never pet, but would be at the back door every night and morning, didn't show up last week. Have no idea how old it was. Would have taken it to a vet, but I would have had to trap it, plus not many vets want to deal with this. This cat was a tough guy.
Hasn't shown up for more than a week now, so I can assume he died somehow. I really felt badly and still do. My house has at least 100 feet or ramps for the cats to run up and down the ceilings, plus 4 big cat poles at least 8 feet high. The back veranda is totally enclosed with chicken wire, letting the cats go out whenever they like, but not letting them go anywhere.
Some of the other cats lay outside of the veranda and it's fun to watch these guys look at each other. Many people have happy marriages, but most don't. Otherwise the divorc
